BMG Hardware was set up by brothers Brian & Tony McGowan in October 1985. It was just the two of them when they started trading from a rented premises in the old Marine Hotel with a Volkswagen Golf van and trailer for deliveries. The first day’s trading amounted to less than 50 punts and products were spread out on the shelves to make them look full. For the first couple of years full lorry loads of cement were carried in and out by hand as no forklifts were available. The business grew slowly, moved to the main street and in 2007 moved to its current purpose built location. It has survived two recessions to now employ 30 people from Leitrim, Donegal, Sligo and Fermanagh. BMG’s founding ethos of providing excellent customer service is as important to the business in 2015 as it was in 1985. BMG delivers to North Sligo, North Leitrim, west Fermanagh and South Donegal.
In late 1999 the business expanded and Martin McGowan and John McGroary set up Donegal Town Hardware which now employs 20 people. Donegal Town Hardware adopted BMG’s model of carrying a huge range of products, hiring expert staff and putting their customers first in everything they do.
